Summer Saturdays are on! Open 9am-1pm
Closed Thursday, June 19

I’m a fan of The Who and I would like to say: “The Kids are Alright,” but they are more than alright. We had a great year with our afterschool visitors! Our Youth Services team came together to develop Dungeons and Dragons, Crafternoons, a Book Group and several other programs to make the library a little less ordinary for our student visitors.

Why? You ask…

Because they make our afternoons a little less ordinary with their cheer, studiousness and many thoughtful interactions. Thank you, Scarborough parents, for raising your children to know that this is the place to study and meet with friends.

But, most importantly, thank you for raising happy people! No matter how complicated my day gets, before I go home, I hear their happy voices throughout the courtyard. It’s one of my secrets to happiness.

When young minds form the idea that libraries have countless resources, they will know as adults that this is the place to come when in need or when they are just curious about the world around them. When they learn that this is a safe and welcoming environment, they will grow up to pass on the gift of library use to their children.

Libraries aren’t always quiet places, not anymore. When they have the means, libraries create quiet spaces. But the modern public library is a vibrant place in communities across the country, and Scarborough Public Library is one of the rare libraries that students visit daily. Most libraries envy us for that reason.

We deeply thank Scarborough school staff, principals, and administration for working with us to make this a successful year. What an amazing school system brimming with talent!

Happy summer, friends!

Summer Learning Kick-Off June 18! Fun for All Ages!
Having fun at the library is a year-long affair, but we like to make our summers extra special. We have special activities for all ages, starting with our kick-off event, a Multicultural Potluck! We're partnering with our friends at The Enclave of Scarborough on Wednesday, June 18 from 5-7pm.

Originally thought of as a party for our friends learning English here at the library through Scarborough Adult Education, we decided that we wanted to invite EVERYONE to mix and mingle. Sharing food and conversation is a universal theme! Bring a favorite dish to share from your culture or one you appreciate!

Location: The Enclave, 18 Black Point Road.

The Youth Services theme this summer is Around the World: Your Passport to Understanding. You can find Summer Learning events for kids here.

But what about reading books and at-home activities? We've got you. Kids can pick up a bingo sheet and earn cool brag-tags to wear as a keychain, backpack decoration or necklace. Deanna designed a version for babies and toddlers to enjoy books and games in an age-appropriate way too! Storytime parents, summer learning is for you too!

Older teens and adults are invited to pick up a bingo sheet in Adult Services (for a challenge) or use the five-book punch cards to enter a raffle. Every card listing five books you've read becomes a raffle ticket for signed-by-the-author titles, gift cards to local businesses and more!

Take a Book Outside!
Are you excited about the warm weather? The sunshine, warm breezes, ice cream, farmer’s markets, beach days, and books to read! I have a checklist of what is needed to enjoy a book or two in summer: sunglasses, beach towel, sunscreen, and a cold drink. To really enjoy the summer please keep our books happy and do not mix them with liquids, ice cream, messy sandwiches, sand, or sunscreen.

Looking for a book that is truly beach ready? Check out our Little Free Library or the Friends' book shop shelves in our lobby! Or swing by the Book Sale on Saturday, June 21!

A Few LGBTQ+ Events for Pride Month!

My personal event planning philosophy is that every month is for everybody and I like to cover a wide range of interests and topics always. I don't restrict topics to the "official month" they have been assigned, but sometimes we make a little extra effort or things just naturally seem to fall into place.

Our LGBTQ+ community encompasses all races and ethnicities, all socioeconomic groups, and is frequently marginalized. We like to pay a little extra attention during Pride Month for these reasons. For those to whom it matters, it matters a lot.

For teens and teen-friendly adults, our Youth Services team is putting on our second annual Pride Trivia coming up on June 10. Register here!

For history buffs, we have a program on June 12 about preserving Maine's queer history called Queering the Past: Speaking Up and Stepping Out with scholar Wendy Chapkis.

On July 1, the Friends of the Scarborough Library are hosting an Emerson Lecture on the topic of Trans Poetics as a Form of Resistance with t. love smith, poet.

Other LGBTQ+ inclusive events can be found here: All of our other events. Your place is here, with us. You are always welcome and always will be.

Recycling the "Hard to Recycle" Items, Now at Your Library!
Scarborough Public Library is now a drop-off location for recycling plastic film with NexTrex. WHEN we recycle 1,000 pounds of plastic (by Earth Day 2026), NexTrex will gift us a bench made from recycled plastics! How cool is that?

Find the box in our lobby, along with a handy flyer detailing what can and cannot be recycled this way. For more information: Plastic Bag & Film Recycling | NexTrex

This is just one more tool in our sustainability toolbox. Besides our pesticide free gardens, we also have solar panels & an EV charger.

Libraries are long-time leaders in sustainablity with the sharing of resources. Have you ever calculated your library value? If you check out books, use ebooks & audiobooks, learn from databases, or attend a program for adults or kids, you are saving money and resources.
