Footnotes: March 2026
Keep scrolling for the director's note, three vignettes, save the date, and one cool library resource!

Our generator is here!

When we fired it up for the first time, Nancy Crowell joined us to sign her name on the enclosure and as the diesel motor kicked on, we officially became a warming, cooling, and charging center during extended power outages. During normal operational hours we will be able to connect you with partner agencies to access emergency resources, our bottle filling station will be accessible (thanks to the Portland Water District and Friends Group), hot coffee, telecommuting areas, and computers to help you make insurance claims.

The town has worked tirelessly over the years to prepare for increasing climate impacts. The collaboration between the town, donors, and local organizations (including the Chamber of Commerce and Project GRACE) made this, Nancy Crowell’s dream, a reality. So when the weather subsides and the road clears, we are open for business. Your business!

We've "put a pin in it" long enough, it's time to add a PIN!
Greetings from the Circulation Desk! I have exciting news to share from the Minerva consortium. Beginning on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, patrons will start to use a four-digit PIN along with their library card number to access their account and place holds. This upgrade helps protect everyone’s library account and prepare Minerva for future software updates.

When logging in to your account on March 17 you will be prompted to create a PIN. A link will appear on “My Library Account” login page titled Create/Reset PIN. Click the link and follow the prompts. You will need a valid email account to set your PIN and reset it if needed. If your email has changed, please call to update your email. If you do not have an email account, please call and we will help you add a PIN to your account.

We will provide handouts at the circulation desk with detailed instructions in early March.

Again, this will begin on March 17, 2026, and if you have any questions or need help please call the library at 207-883-4723. We are happy to help you navigate this new change.

Growing a Greener Future Together
This spring, we’re excited to take part in Neighborhood Forest’s 17th Annual Free Tree Program as part of our Earth Month celebrations this April.

Neighborhood Forest is a nonprofit organization that encourages environmental stewardship through the simple joy of planting trees. Since 2010, the program has helped more than 310,000 children across North America plant trees of their own creating hands-on experiences that grow along with them.

There are three ways to participate. Families can register a child to receive a free tree to plant at home, purchase a tree if you do not have a child participating, or donate $5 to help place a tree in the hands of a child in our community.

Register by March 15th

Trees (approximately 6–12 inches tall) will arrive around Earth Day, April 22nd, with tree species announced in early April. Neighborhood Forest aims to provide native and/or fruit-bearing trees whenever possible. All registered families will pick up their trees at the Library as part of our Earth Month celebration. Stay tuned for more details on pick-up and other Earth Month activities!

By taking part, families are helping children build a lasting connection to nature—one tree at a time. Thank you for helping us grow a greener future together.

A New AudioVisual System - Coming Soon!
Scarborough Public Library has received a grant from the Davis Family Foundation to support its Connected Community project, an initiative designed to strengthen the library’s role as a vibrant community hub through technology and space enhancements.

The project will expand access to technology and address growing space constraints within the library’s existing footprint. Improvements include professional-grade audiovisual equipment for the Community Meeting Room, an interactive Smart Board, and other enhancements that will create new opportunities for learning, collaboration, and civic engagement.

“This project allows us to respond directly to how our community is using the library today,” said Richard Schrader, Director of Scarborough Public Library. “From students and remote workers to local organizations and municipal partners, the Connected Community initiative expands access that support learning, connection, and civic participation.”
