A common question that I have heard over the years is “do people still go to the library?” Well, the answer is, and always has been, a confident “yes.” A funny observation as I am in the middle of my third year at Scarborough. Nobody asks me that question anymore. It is well known to the Scarborough community that people still use the library because all of you are here, so thank you for rendering that question obsolete.

Annually we see over 110,000 visitors and check out over 200,000 items. Whether picking up an interlibrary loan, browsing new books, finding Large Print or multimedia, these items have a meaningful lifespan. Our downloadable items are more popular than ever and bring generous donor support. As our Annual Appeal winds down in the next two months, we are vibrant and relevant because of our donors and faithful library users. Thank you for making us a destination in your weekly lives!

May is a WOW month!
With people willing to leave their nice, warm homes again, May has become ridiculously packed with free things to do at your favorite library. Here are the things I am the most excited by, and why!

Domestic Violence Panel with Finding Our Voices -- Holy moly is this a big deal. Finding Our Voices is a grassroots nonprofit shining a light on domestic abuse. It is absurdly common to find domestic abuse in couples and families. They'll teach us how to spot the signs, help those we care about, and shine our own lights on this problem. Let's learn from each other and lift each other up. Can I get that embroidered on a pillow, please?

The Fight for Disability Rights -- YES. All kids deserve a good education. Janine Leffler and her mother, Maryann Cocca-Leffler, wrote a book together about Janine's life as a person with disabilities. If you like the arts, Janine runs the social media for Double House Arts Collective in Portland, one of my favorite places. If you have a kid in your life with disabilities, or you have disabilities yourself, or you care about equal rights, this is for you. It is also an interesting opportunity to learn how a picture book is made! Maryann has written a lot of books for kids! Check out her other works here.

The Mystery of Miss Pattee -- A real-life mystery brought to us by the amazing Linda Snow McLoon. There's scandal, there's crime, there is the biggest fraud of the 19th century! Having heard Linda before, I know that this has been meticulously researched and told through the voice of a natural storyteller. I'm a little excited.

Shadows of Noir: Discover the Fascinating History and Meaning of Film Noir -- I mean, yeah. We all love movies, and film noir is among the best of the best. A program of the Maine Humanities Council, Maine Speaks, is sponsoring film historian Dan McQueen from Shadows of Noir. I've heard that he's a really entertaining speaker. I cannot wait. We'll be following it up with a film noir movie marathon.

Author Talks with Libby Buck and Mira Ptacin -- a library's bread and butter. We love a good story. Libby Buck has got one! Her debut novel, Port Anna, was fantastic. I can't wait to hear more about it and get my copy signed! Mira Ptacin is an absolute delight. I met her at another author's event, and instantly fell for her charm and humor. She has written both novels and a memoir, both full of wit and wonder. Guaranteed good time or I'll refund your (free) ticket.

AND goofy fun stuff because we're not just about learning, we are also about community: Clothing Swaps! Fairy Houses! Movies! And the last Board Game Night of the season! And that's not even everything happening this month! If you've read this whole thing, let me know!

Homework Help @ the Library
Support, confidence, and a place to land after school
Scarborough Public Library is excited to offer Homework Help @ the Library, a free tutoring program designed to support elementary and middle school students during the busy after-school hours.

Each Tuesday from 3:00–4:30 PM, students from Scarborough Middle School and local elementary schools can stop by the library to get help with homework, studying, and school assignments. The program is staffed by dedicated student volunteers from Scarborough High School’s Key Club and National Honor Society—providing not only academic support, but positive peer mentorship as well.

The after-school hours matter. They’re a time when students need both structure and independence: a place where they can settle in, focus, and feel comfortable asking for help. Homework Help @ the Library offers just that: a relaxed, welcoming workspace with light snacks and supportive guidance, all within the trusted environment of the library.

Whether a student needs help getting started, staying organized, or working through a tricky assignment, our Homework Helpers are here to assist. Drop in after school—no pressure, just support.

Pre-registration is encouraged and will be given priority, but walk-ins are always welcome. FMI contact Deanna at 396-6278 or dmcnamara@scarboroughlibrary.org

Powering Community
The Scarborough Public Library invites you to Powering Community: a ribbon cutting and celebration on Wednesday, May 21, 2026, from 12:30 to 2:00 PM.

Join us to mark the installation of the library's new backup generator, an essential investment that ensures the library can continue to serve as a dependable source of information, connection, and support when our community needs it most.

This milestone was championed by former director Nancy Crowell, whose dedication to the library's long-term resilience made the project possible. The celebration will be a moment to honor her leadership and to recognize the generous donors who brought this vision to life.

The afternoon will also be an opportunity to connect with neighbors, community leaders, and fellow supporters, and to hear about the library's vision for the future. Whether you have been a close partner in the library's work or simply value the role it plays in the life of our town, please join us.

Save the Date!

One Cool Library Resource: The Seed Library (and future return of the Gleaning Table!)
Got leftover seeds? Our Seed Library has been popular this spring and we're starting to run low on seeds! Donations can be left next to the seed library, either in the original packaging (opened is okay!) or in another container. Be sure to include information about:
  • The kind of seeds they are
  • Whether they're saved seeds or from a vendor (the name of the vendor is helpful too!)
  • Roughly how old the seeds are
And keep us in mind this summer when your herbs, tomatoes, zucchinis, and other garden growth is in need of sharing! We'll be setting up our gleaning table in mid-June so we can share from our gardens and/or enjoy the freshness from our neighbors.
